Anxiety attack due to birth control pill?
lovemy02lancer asked:
Hi
Does anyone know for sure and out of experience if birth control pills cause anxiety attacks? or at least contribute to them? if so did going off of BCP help the anxiety?

They do not.
Anxiety attacks are mostly “mental” and in your mind. See a psychiatrist.
Yes, I started having anxiety attacks when I went on the pill. Don’t let people tell you that you are “mental” or that it’s “all in your head” Your mind and body are connected and every chemical you put in your body effects you in some way.
The change in my hormone levels had a huge effect on my body and I gained weight (not a lot, but 10-15 pounds altogehter,) and my hormone levels totally changed even though my gyn said the pill only had a “small level” of hormones in it.
I did end up going to a therapist, and a psych, but it was only when I went off the pill that they finally subsided (it took a LONG time to figure that out.)
Of course, if there is a history of anxiety or depression in your family, it might just be a trigger, or it could be something else entirely. There are lots of factors.
If you are just staring to be sexually active, or have other “issues” in your life, I would consider going to a therapist (if you can afford it, or try to find a clinic) and also to your ob/gyn and tell him/her what has happened.
In the meantime, it wouldn’t hurt to go off the birth control– but ONLY if you aren’t going to get PREGNANT because if you are having anxiety that is the *worst* thing that could happen. (Not that children aren’t wonderful, but…)
If you are with more than one partner you should be using condoms anyway, and I’ve never been able to use birth control and have been using condoms for 15 years with no problems.
Good lucky. Anxiety is hard, but it doesn’t have to be forever if you take care of it.
Birth control pills can cause or exacerbate anxiety attacks. They can also cause or worsen depression. I was taking Mircette, and I experienced a panic attack and depression couple weeks after I started taking it. That had never happened to me before, and I got off Mircette. I switched to a different pill, and I was ok.
Couple years later, my doctor wanted to switch me back to Mircette, because it’s lower dose, and I agreed, thinking that the panic attack might have been caused by something else other than the pill. The same thing happened after 5 days, and I finally decided to get an IUD. I have never had an anxiety attack ever since.
For me, switching to a different type of pill completely eliminated the problem (the first time) and going off the pill also eliminated it (the second time).
Even if it is a preexisting condition “all in your head” , progesterone can exacerbate it, so talk to your doctor about it- it’s not uncommon at all.
Yes I did from the Nuva Ring I used it for 5 months and only had a problem the last month. They went down within a few days of stopping it and been off for a few weeks now with none. People that say you are mental have never had hormonal inbalance.
