What is a good medication for panic attacks?

medication for panic attacks
Mel asked:

I went to my doctor because I was having severe crushing chest pain that is directly related to my job (the VP wants me to quit so the facility does not have to pay unemployment & because I reported billing errors to my boss then her boss).
I was admitted to the hospital and worked up for heart problems and was told its definately not my heart (no history of heart disease, smoking or other factors, I was fine until the VP turned on me).
My doctor originally put me on Lexapro, then told me to stop taking it because it isn’t doing anything. Problem is, when I go to work I am shakey, nausous, I feel like there is a knife in my inferior vena cava and in general I just feel scared being there (I am not at work now).
I wake up thinking about the abuse at work.
What other kind of medication would help with panic attacks?
I’ve never has panic attacks in the past so I am guessing that this will pass once my job does what ever it is going to do to me. problem is they won’t or can’t fire me so the VP of billing intimidates me and is using other tactics to undermine my work.

How long have you been on the Lexapro? With most psychiatric medications it can take between 2 weeks and a month for you to start feeling the full effects of the medication. If you’ve been on it that long, then you should tell your doctor that it’s not helping.

Seroquel is often used for long-term treatment of anxiety, while ativan and xanex are used for shorter term treatment because they’re fast acting and have a high risk of dependency.

there are not any good prescription medications that actually help with panic attacks without making you completely out of it. you can try more natural remedies like exercise, healthy diet, multi-vitamins, etc. if your symptoms get severe enough, see a psychiatrist, and they will probably prescribe you some sort of benzodiazepine (valium, xanax, klonopin, etc).

I take clonazepam for my anxiety (panic) attacks. I take regular doses in the morning and at night and have the option of taking a dose if or when I start to feel an attack coming on.
