medication for panic attacks
Rachel M asked:

If so, how? Or please share any info you think would be pertinent.

Please don’t tell me to take meds, chemically they just don’t work with my body/brain.

I did take meds Prozac(20mg), but CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) is what worked in the end. I haven’t had an attack in over 2 years.

I deal with Panic Attacks about once a month. I used to take meds for them but I really didn’t feel that they helped out. What I do honestly is to work out 4-5 times a week (even just to take a walk after dinner) and that has really helped me out. Another thing is when you feel one come on is to stretch all the muscles that you can in your body, like when you are waking up in the morning, that really seems to help me. I still get panic attacks but by doing these simple things it really makes them more bearable. Hope that helps you.

I have had panic attacks for 7 years and have come to a point where I can control them. When I first starting having them I took medication (Clonazapam) which can be addictive, then the doctor put me on seroquel which makes me sleepy. I went through this for about 2 years, taking tons of different medication which in turn had horrible side effects.

I then started trying to find alternative to medication.

The best thing that i found by far was when you are having a panic attack, Lie flat on the floor with your hands under your butt. Look directly at the ceiling and count to one hundred. this works becuase you are focusing your mind on something else and lying flat helps the tightening that you will feel in your chest.

Another thing you can try is constantly taking small sips of juice, water etc or turning up the music and singing out loud. You need to focus on something else other than the reason you are panicking.

If you are having so many panic attacks in a day I would guess that you have a lot of stress in your life. Set aside a time everyday “worry time” where you deal with the things that are upsetting you and make a plan on how to deal with them.

I hope this helps. I have tons of other tricks too. Let me know if you need more.

in classical meaning, panic attacks generally end in 30-60 minutes without any drugs or treatment and this ending time interval is also one part of description of panic attacks. so during the attack it is a big mistake to administrate any drug. because except intravenous way, no drugs can start to show its effects in 30 minutes. another fact that to find an intravenous way in best hospital situations will be longer than panic attack lasting time… but to treat panic disorder or some of mental illness with panic like symptoms is very easy (in many case) …

I used to have panic attacks and never took meds for them. The way I handled it was to tell myself it was just a panic attack and would stop. Then I just ignored the symptoms and went about my business. They eventually stopped altogether and I haven’t had one in years.

    Hi Rachel,

    No meds are not needed.

You can do many things to help alleviate the stress in your life. Stress is often a common cause for panic attacks and anxiety attacks.

The fact that you do not want to take meds is a good sign. You will be fine. You may be able to change your diet and see if different foods that are added to your diet help. Avoid high sugar items and make sure you drink warm drinks before bed to relax. Getting proper sleep and exercise will help.

If you need more information on panic attacks you should visit — they are part of the health information network

    Hope This helps,

    Tom
