I am having panic attacks, how do I over come them?
hyphy_50 asked:
I was diagnosed a few years ago with anxiety and depression. I haven’t suffered from an anxiety attack in almost 5 years. I was at a ball game and had the worst panic attack I have ever had. I felt like i couldn’t breathe, felt like vomiting and began sweating. I felt as if everything was so closed in and I couldn’t get away. It has been so long since I had one of these that it scared me. I have been dealing with alot of stress and I think that may have been the cause of it. What can I do besides medicine to help me cope and deal with this? Please help!!

The only think I can tell you is I have to take an anti anxiety pill in order to get out of bed due to some things that happen to me a couple of years ago.
I hated the thought of medicine and completley opposed it but now I’m glad that I did it!

Get a pet, something furry, and pet it daily. Animals help reduce stress. Also, walks might help. Good for your body, and you can get stuff sorted out in your mind at the same time.

Get checked out, the symptoms you mention could also be a heart attack. If it was anxiety, find a therapist and ask about cognitive therapy. Stay away from benzodiazepines, Xanax, Ativan, Valium, Klonopin. They are highly addictive, cause other health problems, and can leave you with worse problems than anxiety.

The problem with panic attacks is that while you are having one, it’s almost impossible to get out of it because of the panicked state of mind.
Best solution–try to find coping skills for daily stress and….
Keep a Xanax on you at all times…taking a med once every 5 years is not a problem. Think of it as a mini vacation…plus Xanax works.

Since you can recognize when it is happening, you are in a better position than most people.
Relax, clear the mind, breathe in, out, in, out………..
it is really all in the mind…..once you are able to control the mind, you can thwart any anxiety.
I am not a believer in drugs as a cure…….all that does is poison the body. Learn to control the mind and you can learn to control you attacks.

You need to relize the physiology of a panic attack. Your body is reacting out of proportion to something, pumping adrenaline into your system to get ready to either fight or run. Therefore, the first thing you need to do is get up and do something physical. Preferrably, find a task you have to exert at least some concentration on like vacuuming, scrubbing something, etc. This will get rid of some of the physical energy your sytem got ready for. Then, after you have calmed down a little, thing about what triggered it? Could it be connected to some bad memory you have repressed so far? If that doesnt help, talk to your doc and see if you can not get temporary medication. Good Luck.

They have anxiety medications on the shelves of your local stores, like Wal-Mart. My mom and grandmother both have these, when my grandmother thinks shes about to have one, and sits down and just calms herself. Sometimes you can’t just “hold them back” so be sure to start taking some anti-anxiety medication.

Wow. First you need to know what causes these panic attacks. This is the most important thing to do first. Think back to all the details: was it the noise, the crowds, the intesity of the game, your team losing, someone swearing, too much yelling, too much rich food, the uncleanliness…
Then, I know this sounds lame, but breathing is the most important part next. Once you can breathe, your blood with flow nornally and your mind will clear up. Your muscles will be in your control again. Mainly, you don’t want to get lightheaded becuase the worst part would be to faint which would cause likely injury.
Whenever you go into a situation in which you think there might be a possibilty of a panic attack (ie. awards cemerony, baseball game ect..) do a mental check over of the fastest way to get out of the situation. Do it enough and it will become habit.
Let people know! nothing is worse then when you have an attack and you try telling someone and they DON’T GET IT! they might try to push you back down or tell you to relax in a rude way. If your friend or (boy/girl) friend knows, they will know how to help and calm you down.
Don’t be ashamed. I know it makes you feel like a freak, maybe often, but your senses are just over sensitive, you could say.
Also, bring something you can squeeze or toy with if needed.
I really hope this helps you. enjoy life!

I try this breathing technique, where you breath in through your nose for five seconds then exhale through your mouth for 8 seconds, it constricts the blood flow to your brain and calms you down a little, it helps me most of the time. Try it when you first start to get panicy, it might stop the panic attack, it works for me like 75% of the time.

My psychiatrist said there isn’t a cure for panic attacks. You said that you’ve been under a lot of stress. This is something you need to try to deal with. Write out what is stressing you out if you need to. Also, be aware of your diet. What are you putting in your body? Lots of sugar or caffeine? What kind of thoughts are you thinking? Also, learn breathing techniques. (Look up belly breathing). You might be over-breathing. You can usually tell if your fingers are tingling. Also, Be aware of the difference between feeling anxious and having a panic attack. Don’t start avoiding things, this will make things worse for you.
